On the River Medlock, just outside Philips Park, one of Manchester’s Urban Explorers begins an evening’s adventuring into the hidden spaces of the city with a leisurely stroll down the culvert known as ‘Big Humpty’.
Any Urban Explorer discovering a new site is permitted to name the find, the egg-shaped profile to this tunnel inspiring the name. Far from being a Victorian engineering quirk the ovoid shape ensures that when the river level is low the tunnel does not silt up, a technique used throughout the UK.
